Re-Launch Set For Better And Bolder York Dungeon As Work Begins To Repair Flood Damage

The York Dungeon, one of the city’s most loved and longest established visitor attractions, will re-launch in Spring 2013, better and bolder than ever before.

Supported by a £2 million investment from attraction owner Merlin Entertainments, The York Dungeon brings 2000 years of authentic York history to life with a unique mix of talented live actors performing in 11 scarily funny shows, stunning special effects and new edge of your seat surprises.

Guests can expect the return of all their favourite characters including gunpowder plotter Guy Fawkes, infamous highwayman Dick Turpin and Viking King Eric Bloodaxe.  Plus a full supporting cast of colourful characters, including the friendly torturer, crazy plague doctor and a judge that you might class as bonkers. There will be more authentic theatrical sets and new scripts to provide guests with a dramatic and unique experience.

“The York Dungeon provides a fantastic and scarily funny experience, focusing on a unique style of gripping storytelling,” explains General Manager, Helen Douglas.  “When we re-launch The York Dungeon next year we are taking things up a level. By creating new scripts that are funnier than ever and more authentic styling, we want to ensure The York Dungeon is better than ever before. We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors back to something fresh and dynamic that’s laugh out loud funny and scream out loud scary all at the same time.”

Recent flooding of the River Ouse damaged two thirds of The York Dungeon attraction, leaving it unfit for operation. This gave the team an opportunity to update the guest experience. The York Dungeon has consistently enjoyed top visitor ratings – currently demonstrated by an ‘excellent’ review on Trip Advisor.

The renovation begins this week in preparation for a grand re-opening for Easter 2013.

“We are delighted to announce the re-launch of The York Dungeon.  Recent times have been especially challenging.  We would like to thank the local community and businesses for their support.  This is an exciting new chapter for The York Dungeon.”

It is curtain-up for The York Dungeon on 22nd March 2013.
