Ghostbusting Castle Supper

Coombe Abbey

Coombe Abbey

Wannabe ghostbusters are being invited to enjoy a guided tour around one of Warwickshire’s oldest buildings.

Coombe Abbey hotel, which dates back to the 12th century, is hosting a ghost walk and supper on Monday (September 2), giving brave visitors the chance to learn more about its history and the various spirits that are believed to roam its halls.

The former Cistercian abbey, which sits in 500 acres of parkland on the outskirts of Coventry, is rumoured to have several spectres, including that of Abbot Geoffrey who was brutally murdered in 1345.

While many visitors claim to have seen the Abbot wandering Coombe Abbey in his distinctive hooded cloak, others have reported seeing a ghostly horseman riding around the property, as well as a woman in Victorian dress cycling along the road outside the hotel.

There have also been several reports of spooky footsteps being heard along the cobbled walkways and doors slamming shut in the middle of the night.  This is often linked to sightings of a young girl who once served as a stable hand for the Craven family who used the property as their home for three centuries.

Those attending Coombe Abbey’s ghost walk and supper will have the chance to learn more about these sightings, as well as taking their own tour of the haunted hotel.

Ron Terry, General Manager at Coombe Abbey hotel, said: “Coombe Abbey has a long history and, as such, has seen more than its fair share of tragedy and triumph.

“Some of the people who have resided at the property during the past 800 years are still making their presence felt and this is a great opportunity for visitors to learn more and perhaps maybe meet them.”

Tickets for Coombe Abbey’s ghost walk and supper, which is open to adults only, are priced at £29 each and include a two-course hot and cold buffet with a complimentary glass of wine.
