The spotlight shone on Cornwall in last nights (15 November 2010) South West Tourism Excellence Awards 2010/2011 with more top titles being claimed by Cornish businesses than any other county. Seven of the seventeen gold trophies went in Cornwall’s favour including the coveted Winner of Winners award which The Scarlet collected having also won Small Hotel of the Year as well as the award for Sustainable Tourism in conjunction with the Bedruthan Steps Hotel.

Further Cornish businesses celebrating at the Riviera International Conference Centre Torquay, where the regional awards took place, were the Eden Project, Porthminster Beach Café, Mother Ivey’s Bay Holiday Park and the Gourmet Surf Experience by Global Boarders and Ben’s Cornish Kitchen who all won gold in their respective categories. Additionally, Cornwall also claimed three silver, one bronze and nine finalist placements on the winners roll.

Malcolm Bell, Head of VisitCornwall, the Cornwall Development Company tourism service for the county, comments: “I am immensely proud of our Cornish winners, they are true ambassadors for the county. To claim the majority of gold title proves that Cornwall is leading the way in the tourism industry and that the county is home to quality, excellence and a passion for making our visitors feel welcome.”

Alistair Handyside, Chairman of South West Tourism, added: “I am absolutely delighted with not only the standard of entries, but also the calibre, dedication and passion for quality of our winners – the tourism industry of the South West goes from strength to strength. Each year, we showcase what is truly excellent about our visitor economy and we celebrate success – in customer service and experience and our industry in general.”

This year’s awards event was presented by journalist and broadcaster Declan Curry, best known for presenting the business on BBC Breakfast and hosting BBC’s Working Lunch business programme.

The Gold Award winners at this years awards will all now go on to represent Cornwall and the south west region at the National Enjoy England Awards for Excellence in 2011.
