Sun City: The Las Vegas of South Africa

Sun City: The Las Vegas of South Africa

Historically, South Africa has been a country largely lacking in gambling opportunities for tourists.  The South Africa’s Gambling Act of 1965 saw all forms of gambling, except horse racing, banned. However, this law did not prohibit thousands of cowboy casinos popping up in the banustans of Bophuthatswana, Ciskei and Transkei.

The popularity, and continued survival, of gambling establishments led the South African government to implement the 1996 National Gambling Act, this popular legislation helping a succession of legal casinos to come into existence across the country. Since then, South Africa has become an emerging player in the global gambling marketing, both offline and online.

South African Gambling No Longer Just An Online Game

Whilst South Africa is still establishing itself as a competitor to Las Vegas and Macau in terms of luxury casinos in the vein of Caesars Palace or Grand Lisboa, it has quickly become a heavyweight in the industry of online casinos. This sudden emergence has been spearheaded by the website Gambling Africa – this online casino having racked up both loyal members and universal acclaim since its debut in the late 1990s.  Indeed, if you are interested in learning more about the pioneers from South Africa that have driven the growth of online gambling, you can read about them here.

However, whilst for now South Africa remains only a big hitter in the online world of gambling, this could be all about to change with Rustenburg’s luxury casino and resort Sun City getting increasing international attention.

A Venue Fit for a Queen

The brainchild of Sun International hotel tycoon Sol Kerzner, Sun City opened on December 7, 1979. The luxury complex, boasting four hotels within its perimeters, first came to the world’s attention when British rock royalty Queen performed a series of concerts at the venue in October 1984. The Freddie Mercury band was the first in a series of music legends to perform at Sun City, including Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart and Elton John.

However, since this procession of famous performances ended in the 1990s, Sun City is now more known for its luxury casino and world-class hotels. The extravagant and glamorous casino, the largest integrated hotel/casino in South Africa, boasts 33 tables and 852 gaming machines spread across an astounding 125,000 square feet.

Moreover, with a minimum bet of just $0.02 dollars but with a maximum reaching $10,000, this classy establishment caters for both casual gamblers and seasoned pros alike!

Sun City is the new Sin City

Whilst Sun City’s colossal casino may rival the best that Sin City has to offer, it is in the variety of additional activities available that this fabulous resort really tramples all over Las Vegas.

Sun City boasts two international standard 18-hole golf courses, including the world renowned Lost City Golf course designed by legend Gary Player. This unique course is particularly notable for its water feature near the 15th hole that contains 38 crocodiles!

Even if this isn’t for you, the resort boasts an exceptionally beautiful manmade beach, a jungle safari and picturesque gardens to relax in.

The Price is Right

What is even more remarkable than Sun City’s classy casino, gorgeous grounds and scintillating sights, is the value for money it offers. Whilst many would expect a resort of this calibre to be highly expensive, you can actually get a room for only $211 dollars. So, whilst we cannot make any promises about the casino, we can definitely say you won’t be taking a gamble if you decide to book a room.
