3.5 hrs from San Francisco to the source of its drinking water, the Hetch Hetchy Resevoir was the site of a rejuvenating weekend getaway.
Stopped in the funky town of Groveland for a few supplies and a fire permit.
Given the choice of an established campground or dispersed camping we will always opt for pulling off the side of a deserted fire road and the magnificent solitude it offers.
The hike was fairly easy, 4km to Wampana Falls and another 6km to Rancheria Falls with spectacular wildflowers and a couple of snake sightings along the way. Running through the waterfalls, gushing after a winter of heavy rainfall did not prevent us from getting soaked, a wonderful relief on a hot day but I was grateful for my waterproof boots.
Found the perfect spot to camp in dense forest, with plenty of firewood just waiting to be gathered for a blazing fire. Sat back and soaked up the silence, the stars and the freedom of the wilderness. Bliss.
thank you Tracy for the contribution
