Helsinki, since founded by King Gustavus Vasa of Sweden the city has experienced many changes from its originality at the mouth of the River Vantaa in 1550. Since then the city relocated itself to its current standing alongside the sea.
It became the capital of the autonomous grand duchy of the Russian Tsar in 1812 and only in 1917 did Helsinki become the capital of the Republic of Finland once the country gained independence.
