Bath Celebrates Its History

Roman Baths

Roman Baths

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bath is celebrating its unique Roman and Georgian heritage this year with special events throughout the summer months and the completion of major building work to restore one of the city’s leading attractions.

No. 1 Royal Crescent re-opens
One of Bath’s leading attractions, No. 1 Royal Crescent, will be re-opening its doors on 21 June 2013 following a major project to reunite its original 18th Century servants’ wing with the rest of the house.  The refurbishment will double the number of rooms open to the public and create a brand new extended historic house museum.  In the twentieth century the lease for No.1 was split with the original service wing being sold separately as No.1a Royal Crescent.  The £5 million project will restore No. 1a with the main building increasing the exhibition space from five to ten dressed rooms. Each room will provide visitors with a wonderful example of period design with authentic furniture, paintings, objects and textiles, making it one of the UK’s finest examples of late Georgian architecture.

Museums at Night
Bath will be holding a number of events as part of the ‘Museums at Night’ celebrations – a national event where  attractions unlock their doors to the public and hold special evening events over the weekend 16 – 18 May.  The Fashion Museum will host an evening of fashion tours, dancing and Champagne tasting to celebrate the attraction’s 50th anniversary exhibition of ’50 Fabulous Frocks’.  At the Bath Postal Museum, visitors will be able to see the attraction by candlelight and experience the same flickers that illuminated the Post Offices of Victorian Britain.  The Bath Postal Museum tells the history of 4,000 years of communication from clay mail to e-mail including Bath’s role that led to the establishment of the modern postal system.  Other Bath attractions taking part include the Roman Baths, who are holding a musical tour through history with music on an ancient lyre, medieval hurdy gurdy and modern jazz, and the Building of Bath Collection who will be open for a free evening of the Brutal Bath exhibition, which reveals the story of post-war architecture in Bath, accompanied by lively music from the 1950s and 60s.

Roman Baths by Torchlight
The city’s most visited attraction will open in the summer evenings during the months of July and August.  As darkness falls, the ruins of this vast Roman building are an awesome sight.  By the light of flickering torches, visitors will be able to walk on 2,000 year old pavements, see original baths and artefacts and really sense the spirits of the ancients, providing a truly magical atmosphere which no other venue can surpass.
