In 2010, Tenerife not only proved to be a popular holiday destination, but also a fantastic location for filming and fashion shoots, thanks to its stunning natural beauty and wonderful climate. Following the success of the filming of Hollywood blockbuster movie “Clash of the Titans”, Tenerife has continued to host a variety of well-known brands seeking an unusual or spectacular setting.

Assets that attract producers to Tenerife from across the globe include excellent weather conditions such as year round spring temperatures and over 3,000 hours of sunlight per year, as well as a wide variety of unique landscapes including black and golden sand beaches, moonscapes and subtropical forests. All this combined with a low-tax rate, good airline accessibility and experienced staff on-location provides the perfect environment for filming and photography.

Favourite locations vary from the Teide National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most visited National Park in Spain), to sun-kissed beaches along the Adeje coastline, the avant-garde opera house in the city of Santa Cruz and lush, mountainous areas in the north of the island.

Last year, Tenerife Tourism Corporation assisted a total of 89 national and international productions via the Tenerife Film Commission, a department within the tourist board. According to 2010 figures, 531 days of filming took place on the island, approximately twice the amount of filming during the previous year. Consequently, the department managed 220 enquiries and sourced 129 permits.

Since it was launched in year 2000, the Tenerife Film Commission has supported 705 filming shoots and photo shoots, 97 of which were commissioned by UK companies, with the most popular productions being photo shoots, commercials, and TV programmes.

Among the UK-based companies which chose Tenerife to be featured as a backdrop in corporate videos, commercials or shootings include the Post Office, Ford, National Geographic-Samsung, Paul Smith, ITV This Morning, Thomson and ITV´s Take me Out dating show.

The Vice-President and Councillor for Tourism in Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, commented: “the amount of productions in 2010 increased by 15% compared to 2009, which is testament to Tenerife’s credentials as an authentic set for filming and photo shoots, providing a valuable promotional tool for our island”.

The Tenerife Film Commission, which helps to plan productions on the island, has actively worked with international organisations and has presented the island to producers at the Malaga, Las Palmas and San Sebastian Film Festival Festivals, the International Locations Expo in Seville, Berlinale, the Cannes Festival and the Los Angeles Locations Trade Show.
